Tricks with colour

In this article we are going to touch on a few points on how to make your room look larger and cosier.

Make your room look larger

  • Use colours from the cool end of the colour wheel.
  • Paint all surfaces the same colour.
  • By keeping the floor space dark and the walls light it will appear to expand.
  • If the ceiling is low you can make it look higher if you paint it a lighter shade than the walls.
  • To give the illusion of space you should use the deepest colour near the floor and the lightest shade on the ceiling.
  • Large furniture will appear small if they are the same colour as the walls.
  • Small rooms does not have to be painted in light colours. You could emphasise its cosiness by painting it deep red.

Make your room more cosy

  • Use colours from the warm side of the of the colour wheel.
  • Warmer shades on the ceiling will bring the height of the room down and make it feel cosier.
  • Keep flooring neutral when using bright colours such as red or orange.

Other tricks

  • Paint the end of a long corridor a dark colour as this will bring it closer
  • If you want to make your rectangular room appear squarer, paint the two short end walls a darker shade.
