Small rooms

In a small apartment, it is important to evaluate the space that you have to ensure that you make the most of it. Take advantage of every nook and cranny. Consider making areas and furniture multi purpose. Remember, you don't have to have space to have style.

Make your space work for you

When one room has to fulfil various functions, you may have to substitute some large pieces of furniture with smaller pieces. This will make the room visually attractive and pleasing to the eye.

Dressing for your size

The advantage with small rooms is that the smaller wall surfaces require a smaller budget, so why not treat yourself to some beautiful wallpaper? A large print can look fantastic in a limited space, just keep it light and bright as a busy print can make your room look fussy. Think about creating one feature wall, more and the pattern might begin to box you in.

A large mirror on one wall will reflect the rest of the room, instantly creating depth. Over a fireplace is a good space as this is a dead area of space. You could consider the reflections itself and place a mirror opposite a window and let the natural light shape your room.

Display personal treasures such as photographs and ornaments in small clusters of smaller items together, rather than lots of large pieces which can make the room look cluttered.

Remember that the view out of your window is essential for giving your room a feeling of spaciousness. If your neighbours aren't to nosy, you might find that curtains or blinds that you open during the daytime are better than net curtains or voile that stays shot and obscures your view. Avoid large swags, pelmets and tiebacks, as these will make your room feel claustrophobic.
