What feng shui can do for you?

By taking control of the way energy around you mixes with your own energy, you can begin to adjust the way you feel. The aim is to identify what you need to change within yourself so that you are more successful in life. So if you need greater confidence in order to succeed in your career, use feng shui to enhance this characteristic within yourself.

The this reasoning, you can apply feng shui to any aspect of your life over which you have a direct influence. For example, to make more friends, you might need to become more expressive: to get better results from interviews, you might need to become more assertive: and to enjoy a good relationship with someone, you might need to show greater understanding. What feng shui cannot help with is events that are outside your control. So it is unlikely that money will pour in from nowhere: or  that the perfect liver will turn up out of the blue!

Myths and superstition

Feng shui is based on a set of concepts that are subject, and like any concept it is not reality itself. Feng shui is simple one way of perceiving the world. The key is not which concept are right or wrong but which set of concepts or belief system is best for you. If you choose to adopt the feng shui perception of the universe, you will get interesting ideas about how you can better interact with you environment and fresh insights on how to improve your life.

Like many other subjects, feng shui ranges from mere common sense to certain aspects that might stretch even the greatest fan's credulity. To weed out the myths and superstition, it is important to understand the subject and to keep referring back to the key concept that make sense to you,. Anything that you use as a feng shui remedy must change the energy of a space or the way you absorb that energy. For example, a plant radiates its own living energy and therefore changes the energy of a room: turning you bed around exposes you to a different energy while you sleep.

Cultural differences

In Chinese culture, certain objects a have a symbolic influence that do not have the same impact on people living outside that culture. For instance, a three-legged toad has specific connotations to some people in China, and each time those people see it, they fell different. Some such objects do not change the atmosphere of a space, but rely on a belief system based in myth and superstition.

Chi is the subtle charge of electromagnetic energy that runs though everything, carrying information from one thing to another. The chi flowing through your body predominantly carries you thoughts, beliefs and emotions.

All the time some of your chi is flowing off, while you are also drawing in new energy. The fresh chi that you draw into your own energy field brings with it something of the world around you. The includes the energy of the weather, the chi of other people, the atmosphere of your home and the living energy of the food you eat. As this chi enters your energy field, it alters you own chi, resulting in you feeling different and having new thoughts. Your energy field connects you to everything else whether you like it or not. The secret to making this energy work is understanding  the process and finding out how you can make it help your life.

Chi in your home

Different areas of your home contain different quantities and qualities of chi:

  • There are particular strong currents of chi around doors and windows. Where there are several doors in a straight line, this can lead to a fast flow of chi, making the home hard to relax in.
  • The larger your home's windows, the faster chi can flow, making for an active space. Windows that face a sunny direction bring livelier, more fiery and stimulating chi.
  • The chi moving through doors an windows generates a horizontal flow, especially if the ceilings are low. This is common in apartments situated close to ground level. The effect of this horizontal flow is that chi passes readily from one person to another, making the space ideal for social and interactive gatherings.
  • Spaces that have high ceilings or tat are set of the side of a hill or at the top of a building have a more vertical flow of chi. This is typical in loft apartments and spaces with a pointed ceiling. It is easier to feel more individualistic here, to come up with original ideas and dare to be different.
  • Sharp corners pointing into a room generate a strong flow of piercing chi. If a corner points towards your bed or chair you may find it hard to sleep well or settle here.
  • The people who live in a house also influence its atmosphere. Arguments, unhappiness or violence can fill a room with negative chi and, over a period of time, the space may begin to carry that atmosphere.
